I recently purchased an electric bike or “e-bike”. I have been looking on and off for e-bikes for years but found nothing that I was really excited about. The I came across a “Fat Bike” at a firm near Vancouver called Surface 604 and they were selling a fat bike called Element. Even better, they were selling it in an electric version. It only took me a couple of weeks of thinking to decide to purchase it.
It’s a four season bike which can be used in the spring, summer fall or winter, driven on or off road including on sand and in the snow! The look, cool colours it comes in and huge “fat” 4 inch wide tires make the bike very noticeable around town so be prepared to get stared at and receive a lot of compliments. People quickly notice it (even though my bike is a non flashy matte black) and seem to love the look of the bike. I love the way it rides, but more on that in a future post.
Full retail price was approximately US $1999 plus tax but if you shop around, some bike shops sell it for less. In addition, Future Shop sells it online. It took about a week to get it by courier. Included is the fat bike whose custom built frame is made with a light aluminum alloy, 4 inch wide tires, a lithium ion battery weighing 8 pounds which can be removed, a 350 watt, 750 watt peak brushless motor in the rear hub, a gauge on the handle bar that turns the motor on and off, offers different level of power, a 7 speed Shimano gear system and a bell. The battery is mounted on a stronger than normal rack in the rear.
What they don’t advertise prominently and which I find the best feature is a pedal assist feature which allows you to pedal normally and have the motor power assist your pedalling. This makes the battery last longer. The battery permits you to travel up to 20 mph (32 kph) and go as far as 20 miles or 32 kilometers. If you use the pedal assist in low power mode, you can go much further than this. I have gone over 50 kilometers using the low level of power assist while I pedal.
It was and is the perfect bike for me as I needed a push to get back into biking after an injury. Also I like to use it instead of my car to go for short errands around town.
If you are interested in an e-bike, you should check out the Surface Element 604. It’s a great bike.
